| The carpets knotted in the Islamabad region were widely distributed on the western market during the early 1980s when the demand for quality carpets could not be met due to the embargo on Iranian goods. Starting in 1982, following a period of intense activity, the Islamabad production was affected by the competition of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s production, and therefore it came more or less to an end. Today, we see the beginnings of a timid return to the market with extraordinary pieces with incredible knot density. Technically, the Senneh knot (open to the right) used in the new Islamabad carpets is defined as “20-20”: this means 20 knots per inch both in width and in depth). The twisted cotton warp threads are completely depressed and two weft threads, one tight and the other loose, pass through every row of knots. The modern Islamabad carpets are worked in the antique Agra patterns and are almost always knotted using valuable yarns dyed with tenuous, refined colors. |
